Top Ten

Our Top Ten of trouble-free, easy to grow plants - some are individual varieties, but we've also nominated some where several varieties are available and all are good!

10. Coral flower (Heuchera) Thrives in almost any soil, and give great ground cover in sun or dappled shade. What about a purple-leaved variety, like 'Palace Purple'? Coral flower (Heuchera)
9. Rose 'Rosa. Mme Hardy' - This rose has very full double flowers. The blooms are white with occasional tints of light pink. The plants grow as thickly as foliaged bushes, between 4 to 6 feet tall. They are definitely among the finest of white roses. Rose 'Rosa. Mme Hardy'
8. Blackberry 'Oregon Thornless' Much prettier than its wild relative, this attractive climber has dark red stems and gorgeous finely divided leaves - dark green, but turning blazing red in autumn. And of course as well as delicate flowers you also get the delicious fruit. Blackberry 'Oregon Thornless'
7. Marjoram Aureum (origanum) This golden-leaved herb does need a bit of sun, but has no problems with difficult soil. As well as the bright foliage, you get white flowers in summer which are much loved by bees - and it tastes great in an omelette! Marjoram Aureum (origanum)
6. Dead nettle (Lamium) With boldly silver-striped leaves and a spreading habit it's ideal for awkward shady areas. Dead nettle (Lamium)
5. Periwinkle (Vinca minor) A tough plant that will produce gorgeous blue flowers practically every day of the year. Trail it over a wall, or you can even grow it up a fence. Choose one of the variegated type for a touch of sun, with mottled cream and green leaves. Or go for the classic dark glossy evergreen. Periwinkle (Vinca minor)
4. Hypericum 'Hidcote' A shrub that's almost impossible to kill. This rounded bush has small delicately scented leaves, and will be covered in golden flowers from summer to early autumn. Almost any spot not completely waterlogged will keep it happy Hypericum 'Hidcote'
3. Hardy geranium (Cranesbill) 'Ann Foulkard' There are a huge number of hardy geraniums, and they all make tough longlasting plants for almost any position in the garden. But the magenta-purple flowers of 'Ann Foulkard' pull it ahead of the crowd. This is one that we always have at Greenleaf - not just because our customers love it, but because we do. Hardy geranium (Cranesbill) 'Ann Foulkard'
2. Euonymus Fortunatei 'Emerald n' Gold' A showy evergreen that brings a touch of the sun to even a shady garden. We are so confident of this shrub's toughness that ours come with a lifetime guarantee - if you manage to kill it we'll give you a new one free of charge. Euonymus Fortunatei 'Emerald n' Gold'
1. Elder (Sambucus) Like the wild tree, incredibly robust and easy to grow, we have two varieties which deserve equal billing. They do need space, but are well worth it. 'Guincho Purple' has fantastic purple leaves, and is hard to beat when the great heads of foamy blossom appear. 'Aurea' has golden leaves and white flowers. Either is ideal for an awkward space under a mature tree. Elder (Sambucus)
