Plants to transform your garden
We all make impulse buys from time to time, but you are much more likely to choose plants which will thrive in your garden and come back year after year if you have thought a little about what your garden is like before you start shopping!
At Greenleaf every plant is labelled with information about its needs in term of soil and light. If you aren't sure if a plant will suit your soil, ask one of our staff for advice. Don't be embarrassed about asking for help - all our staff are taught that everyone has to start somewhere, and they may well need to refer to our library of reference books themselves to make sure the advice they give you is correct.
Before you start buying plants, you should think about:
Drainage
Will the plants be standing with their roots in water over the winter?
How much does the soil dry out in the summer? It's normal for the top few centimetres to dry out under a hot sun - but does the soil below that stay moist?
Acidity
You can get a soil testing kit from our online shop to tell you if the soil is acidic or alkaline. Acidity may affect the plants you can grow, though of course we can supply specialist compost, if you specially want a plant which isn't suitable for your soil to grow in a pot.
Sunlight
It's not a problem if your garden doesn't get full sun - there are a whole range of plants for shady spots which gardeners with sunnier plots would love to be able to grow. But if you pick a sunflower, and plant it in deep shade, it won't thrive.
If you have a garden where nothing seems to grow, or just an awkward spot, why
not ask the Garden Doctor for some suggestions?
We have an enormous selection of plants at Greenleaf, and of course the selection changes according to the time of year. If the plant you are looking for isn't mentioned here, contact us, and we'll let you know if we can get it for you.
